meet my new pet, peeve

Hi. Today is rant day, in which I basically ramble on my recently discovered pet peeve. Give me some moral support if you agree, okay? An enthusiastic amen will do. Here goes.

For a lot of the freshmen at my school, expository (writing) is the dreaded class. For me, however, bio has been one of the more challenging but interesting class I've had over the semester. You may be dubious of just exactly how hard a biology class could be and let me tell you, the sheer amount of information you must understand and commit to memory to make a decent grade would make you want to dig an eight feet deep hole for good measure, jump in, and curl up in a fetal position, all the while sobbing and taking staggering blows to your self esteem.

Okay. I exaggerate. It's not that bad. Truth be told, biology has always fascinated me, so spending my weekends pouring over the textbook and feebly attempting to understand the roles of DNA polymerase III in replication, the ploidy of the daughter cells from a parent where 2n=6 after meiosis, and histone modification in gene expression has been somewhat satisfying.

Emphasis on the somewhat. Moving on to the actual pet peeve.

Our second exam was last Sunday and the class average was a 65, a whopping increase of 1% from the first one. In bio lecture following the announcement of exam results, the most repeated phrase was something along the lines of, "I hate bio. It's so freaking stupid." Some, of course, got creative with their complaints and threw in a few expletives that I will not care to mention here. Not gonna lie, it all really ticked me off (and it's not because I have a personal affinity for the class).

Deep breath. Hulk mode activated.

Why do people call things they can't understand "stupid" or "dumb"?! Saying that you hate a particularly challenging class is one thing, but calling it "stupid" because you fail to understand what you're learning in it is entirely another. For one thing, a class isn't "stupid" because it doesn't have the capacity to lack intelligence as the word means. If anything, the one with the brain is the person. News flash: Calling something dumb doesn't make you any smarter. Studying helps.

Sigh. Hulk mode deactivate. I'm done here. Can I get an amen?
